I am in love with my all-electric Hyundai Ioniq! It’s stylish and emits no tailpipe pollution. Best of all, it saves me time and money!
A few years ago, I was in a car accident. Through the grace of God, I was fine. My car; however, wasn’t. I was faced with a decision: to replace my car with another gasoline-powered vehicle or to buy an EV.
I’ve been a clean energy advocate since the 1980s. I started my journey by reducing energy use in our home, office, and place of worship by installing LED bulbs, smart thermostats, an induction cooktop, and weatherproofing insulation. Our church was one of the first Black churches in Southern Nevada to be powered by solar energy. This history with clean energy made my decision easy. I knew it was time to invest in an electric car.
I shopped around, but couldn’t find the EV I wanted. That’s when a member of my church came to my aid. He’s a car salesman and helped me find my ideal car. The problem was that I couldn’t find it at any of the Las Vegas dealerships! I had to purchase it sight unseen and have it towed to my home.
That’s why I support Governor Sisolak’s Clean Cars Nevada initiative. I was very fortunate to get help shopping for and finding my car, but not everyone has that support. We need more electric vehicle options for sale in town so that others in my community can benefit from the clean air and financial savings that I am experiencing.
Research from Consumer Reports shows that electric vehicle drivers see a fuel and maintenance savings of $6,000 to $10,000 over the lifetime of an electric vehicle. Think about it like this: What would it mean for you if you were paying pennies on the day to charge your car, versus going to a gas station filling it up every week? Then look at how much you pay for regular maintenance like an oil change. If you start taking these expenses of owning a car away, and you have an extra $200-$300 in your pocket every month, how would that benefit you?
Once Clean Cars Nevada is adopted, we’d see about five times more electric vehicles on Nevada lots by 2025 than were sold here in 2018. With more EVs on the new and used car market, prices will keep dropping. That means electric cars and trucks, and the health and financial benefits they bring, will be accessible for more of Nevada’s families and I simply cannot wait until more people in my community get to own an EV!
